In the End…

This blogging experience has been great. At times I would get frustrated because I lacked the time to post regularly. I enjoyed this opportunity because it has allowed me to experience a new way of connecting to an audience. As online shopping continues to grow, reaching consumers through blogs acts as a substitution for going into the store. Connecting to your customer through other forms of media is very important for building new relationships and ensuring repeat customers. Since I want to one day open my own business this experience has taught me how important it is to connect through the blogging world. Also as my career becomes more serious I plan to use social media even more. I look forward to expanding my knowledge of all social media but specifically blogging.

Under Water

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving have been recently introduced to me. While you are out on the water its always so beautiful but seeing whats underneath has its own kind of beauty. The aquatic life can be beautiful depending on the location. Both Scuba Diving and Snorkeling are aquatic recreational activities that require a mask and energy. I myself haven’t Scuba Dived because the gear is insanely heavy and I haven’t had the opportunity to go anywhere exotic for vacation. Snorkeling is great because you can practice anywhere and it isn’t a hassle carrying heaving equipment. To learn more about both click here.

Finding New Trails

Recently me and my honey John went to Canyon Lake to explore new areas. Normally we go to the lake on a consistent basis but we thought it would be a nice change to experience the trails instead of the water. We spent the whole day roaming and walking along the shore. The distance walked combined with the amount of laughter proved to be a pleasant workout. I am so blessed that I have a partner who is adventurous and active just like me. When you are in good company nothing else seems to matter. To see more of Canyon Lake and the trails click here.

Hike to the Sky

Flattop Mountain, located to the east of Anchorage, Alaska,  is one of the most climbed mountains in the Chugach State Park. The elevation of Flattop is 3,510 feet allowing panoramic views of the city and surrounding areas. Flattop continues to be a popular place for locals and tourist to visit due to the vast array of activities and level difficulty.

For me this experience was amazing!! When reaching the top and you look out and see the most breathtaking views. Standing there and realizing you are surrounded by clouds and seeing the planes flying at the same level and below you is one of the most gratifying accomplishments.

The following is an overview of my adventure with my mom and dad.

Naked and Afraid Shoutout

Naked and Afraid takes one man and one woman and brings them to an unknown place with extreme conditions. The show is the ultimate survival challenge unlike any other show on any network. The man and woman are place into an unknown location naked without food water or any form of shelter. They are given a map that will help the couple travel to the pick up location. Both are allowed to bring one tool to help them survive through the journey. The couple is faced with 21 days that test their instinct and survival skills.

Some of the woman that are on Naked and Afraid are truly inspiring. They demonstrated the physical and psychological strength you must possess to survive. They empower woman everywhere to believe in themselves and remind them that nothing is impossible. Societies general conception is men are stronger than woman; Naked and Afraid challenges this idea by some of the women outlasting the men. A few times when I have seen the show the men drink the water and completely disregard the women saying don’t drink it! (men not listening to women… not surprised!) Then the men get sick, leaving everything to the women for survival. Conflict in the partnership and conflict from the voice inside the head can the biggest struggle. These ladies demonstrate to women everywhere to not let fear of failure stop you from accomplishing your dreams.

A few of my favorites from the show!

Manu Toigo. Age 44.

Ky Furneaux. Age 39.

Julie Wright. Age 30.

Laura Zerra. Age 27.

Alison Teal. Age 27.

Kellie Nightlinger. Age 38.

Thank you ladies for being and inspiration to women everywhere!!

App: Lost in Nature.

Maps can often be confusing and can get me turned around and lost. Providing an app that categorizes your interest in activity (biking, hiking, kayaking, etc.) around your area, will help you navigate through the parks and trails without the fear of getting lost. The app allows you to find and share new routes whether its land or water so other people who have your similar interest can find a new place to explore. Lost in Nature, is the name I propose for this app that consists of everything you could think of needing while out on the trail.

As mentioned before the app would allow you to share new paths, as well as pictures. The app will include GPS location so you will never be lost. When hitting the trails you will be able to click a button so you can track your location. In an emergency situation this would allow people the opportunity to instantly alert authorities of the last known location. The app will allow you to view places across the country.

While on your adventure let the app identify plants and wildlife for you. Take a quick picture of the plant or animal and scan it to the app and a full description including important facts will appear. The app will display the weather and offer tips to protect you.

Lost in Nature is the must have app for adventures!!

Give your Feet a Rest!

“Look Deep into nature you will understand everything better.” -Albert Einstein

As summer is quickly approaching I can’t help but think about hitting the water. Whether its paddle boarding, kayaking or floating you are guaranteed to find me on the water. For me nothing beats being out on a beautiful day tanning and getting a great workout in. The water can take you to places that land cannot. Its an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and allows your mind and body to be set free in the beauty of nature.

I have been white water rafting and the adrenaline rush is in-explainable. The water is strong and powerful falling into the rapids can be life threatening. I had the opportunity to white water raft twice while living in Alaska and both trips were unbelievable. The mountains surrounding the rivers were so beautiful it helped in calming the fear that was pumping through my body. The rivers I rafted on were strong and falling overboard could be a serious problem if the current took you under. While going down the river I was paddling for dear life by the take-out point my body was exhausted. From head to toes I felt like a noodle; the smallest amount of force would knock me over. It took about a week for my whole body to fully recover, but the experience was well worth the intense amount of energy and strength involved.

This is a picture of me from my white water trip in Hope, Alaska. Click the picture to visit the Chugach Outdoor Center.

If you’re looking for something less intense kayaking can be a great option. Before hitting the water be sure to know what to expect so you can determine if you’re ready. First timers should start on water that has little to no current to get comfortable with sitting and paddling. Kayaks tip easily, so making sure you are comfortable with the motions before getting into the flowing water. Kayaking provides a great upper body and core workout. As the intensity increases so does the number of calories you burn. When you’re out in the ocean or river the pristine beauty helps you forget about the fierce burn through your arms and abs. While in La Jolla, California I got the opportunity to kayak along the coast and visit several caves. La Jolla is picturesque; being out on the water looking at the beautiful cliffs and houses, while sea lions are jumping next to you is simply indescribable.

Exploring places through your car window doesn’t stand a chance when you can explore by water. You get to experience a whole different perspective out on the water. Kayaking allows you to take you where roads can’t. There are rivers hundreds of miles from roads and that type of experience is once in a lifetime. Neither words nor pictures can truly describe the magical beauty you experience when you are on the water. Experience the beauty of this world out on the water where your mind and body can be set free and relax.

New York Times has devoted a portion to Kayaking and Canoeing. The journey and adventure of different kayak/canoe trips around the world are told. The pictures that are shown are incredible. Click here to visit.

Natures Calling

Before you set out on your adventure make sure you are fully prepared for the worst. From experience I know what it is like being a woman on a trail and needing to use the restroom. As women we have must have items that are crucial for hitting the outdoors. You may say I am high maintenance, but when you’re lost and hungry in the woods you’re going to find yourself wishing you had me!

When I first started adventuring into the outdoors of Alaska I quickly realized how important it was to be prepared. Being from Houston, Texas, bears and moose weren’t what your typically hike through the woods consisted of. I can remember like it was yesterday my parents and I set out to check out trails a few minutes from our home in Eagle River, Alaska. The fun adventure quickly turned sour when it began to drizzle causing me to become freezing cold and look like a mess. Needless to say this “fun adventure” turned out to be a disaster! After this I learned to never leave the house without the essentials.

I can’t begin to stress how important water is for you. When you are out hiking or biking any outdoor activity your body needs to stay hydrated. Carry along a water bottle whether you’re out for a short or extended period of time. Some trails have water fountains but its best not to risk it. Throw some fruit or veggies in your bag to snack on for a quick pick me up. Your body absorbs water from what you eat leaving your body hydrated longer. While drinking water and snacking are important I recommend bringing an Evian mineral bottle; after being in the heat a quick spritz of Evian gives you a refreshing mist of minerals to hydrate your skin. The bottles are small and can fit in most small bags. Sunscreen for your face and body should be applied. There are a plethora of options for sunscreen when choosing one be sure to grab one that’s water-resistant. Skin that is exposed to UV rays can experience a breakdown in the collagen so be sure to reapply as needed. Bug repellants can have harmful chemicals that can harm the skin. Look for bug repellants that are all natural. Protecting and covering your skin doesn’t have to be complicated, simple changes in products can be just what your body needs.

When getting dressed to go hike, be sure to check the weather forecast. If there is the slightest chance of rain just throw in the rain jacket just in case. I prefer to wear thin layers so it’s easy to adjust to the temperature. Keep in mind if you’re going to be out when it’s getting dark be sure to wear bright colors for safety. Your shoes should be supportive and comfortable; Merrell Shoe Company meets both of these standards. While their shoes are pricey they do hold true to their value. Their shoes mold to your feet providing stability and comfort. They have a wide assortment of shoes varying on the intensity of the hike.

If you are hitting the trails alone be sure to have some form of protect. Pepper spray is always an option to carry on secluded trails. You can get small ones that can fit on a key chain. Bringing your dog along is a good idea, not only with your pup provide protection but also motivation to keep going. Going with a friend is another option and it allows you to catch up and gossip. Going with your best friend or boyfriend provides a chance for the both of you to motivate one another while also getting a great workout in.
